It’s basically a well-known fact amongst those the closest to me that if there’s only a 2% chance of something happening, it will happen…to me. Let’s just cut to the chase, I got a negative pregnancy test 8 weeks into my twin pregnancy. I should also mention that I am an admitted POAS addict. For those who haven’t visited a pregnancy forum, recently tried to make a baby, or just don’t know what the hell I’m talking about; POAS is an abbreviation for Pee On A Stick and I was addicted. That little stick that with a simple line (or two) or +/– sign that has the ability to change lives….and alert us of new ones. WE (mommies unite!) live by their guidance, buy them in bulk (for those of you who are still going broke, or staying awake at night because you ‘can’t use too many’ pregnancy tests, STOP IT. Look up Wondfo’s on Amazon, they will allow you the ability to test as much as you would like for a fraction of the cost, they also make ovulation sticks.) I had a blazing positive pregnancy test at under 4 weeks. For that test I had broken out the ‘real thing,’ a First Response Early Detection, after a Wondfo had provided me with a positive. Fast forward one day: a positive blood test telling me my levels were ‘higher than normal.’ Fast forward fifteen more days: we got the news we were having twins with pictures to prove it. Fast forward fourteen more days (making me right around 8 weeks pregnant): I got a negative test…when my dumb ass decided to POAS one more time ‘just to make sure.’ WTF. It was the morning before work when this ‘just to make sure’ peeing on a stick happened. So I did what any reasonable, pregnant(?), rational woman would do: I freaked out, woke up my husband that was working nights at the time, immediately texted a friend of mine three states away who is a Physician's Assistant, took pictures, braced myself for heartache and geared up to call the doc and make an appointment. The result? My husband told me I was nuts, but looked at me with a concerned look in his eye that read 'you know more about this than me…sounds crazy but now I’m a little nervous.’ My professionally certified…and very rational friend…told me it wasn’t possible. That’s when I started collecting evidence (taking pictures of the pregnancy results) and sending them. Evidence does not lie people!!! She told me it must be a fluke but like my husband she wasn’t 100% sure, so she did what any good friend would do and promptly called the lab of the hospital she was working at for ‘hypothetical’ explanation. I, on the other hand, consulted Dr. Google. I ran across this THE HOOK EFFECT. Basically, (because I’m not smart enough to decode the fancy B’s, variants and references to ‘sandwiches’) it means there is an oversaturation of the pregnancy hormone and because there’s too much it doesn’t register on these ‘all knowing’ tests some of us have become addicted to. Brace yourself: The test CAN BE WRONG. Say it again…Pregnancy tests can give a false negative. Shortly after my frantic googling (I have mad google skills in times of need), I got a call from my friend, she said “add water to your pee and test again.” This validated the theory, but it still hadn’t been applied to me. I was in my car, with no pee left in me headed away from my house, in the middle of the day. So instead of recognizing the fact that there was nothing I could do about this either way…I turned around and prayed I would have enough pee in me to pull off a test. Here's what happened: Here was the result: The Hook Effect is REAL.
To my POAS Addict Sisters: I’m sorry you read this. You may now find yourself testing twice once with just pee and once with water added. Do yourself a favor and use a cup. Test your pee first. Add water. Test again. To Wondfo: Your welcome and thank you. I’ve just introduced POAS trainees to your product, you can be expecting them to purchase in bulk. Thank you for providing a fiscally responsible product that allows us POAS addicts to continue peeing on things. To First Response: Don’t worry. You’re still the gold standard. Rest assured all POAS addicts follow up with your test upon any glimpse of a second line. To POAS Addict/Expecting Mommies: If you feel the need to test again after your pregnancy is confirmed. Don’t do it…but if you do (and you will) and you get negative results. Just.Add.Water.
